Century Farms to be Recognized
at
60th Annual Greene County Fair
On Wednesday August 12th, 2009 the
Greene County Fair will be honoring the Century Farms located in
Greene County. This event will be sponsored by Heritage Community
Bank and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.
Currently Greene County has 44
certified Century Farms, more than any other county in the state
except Wilson County in middle Tennessee. Families who own a farm
that may be eligible are encouraged to complete an application by
June 30th. To be considered for Century Farm eligibility, a farm
must be owned continuously by the same family and have been in
agricultural production for at least 100 years; must produce $1000
farm revenue in the year of application; must have at least 10 acres
of the original farm; and must be owned by a resident of Tennessee.
Since 1984, the Center for Historic
Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University has administered
this statewide project that documents Tennessee’s agricultural
heritage and history. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA)
began the Tennessee Century Farm Program in 1976 as a bicentennial
project. Throughout the years of the program, county agents and
county historians have assisted in identifying and certifying
applications prepared by the owners. More than 1200 families
representing farms across Tennessee have submitted applications and
photographs that tell the stories of state and local history.
